Hardest 60 day challenge to date

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you would know that I used to do the 60 day challenge every winter and some years, given travel schedules, sign up to do the summer challenge as well at Bikram Yoga San Jose.

The challenge is to do 60 classes in 60 days. If you miss a day, you do a double on another day. That is two classes in one day to make up for it. It is called a challenge as your body and mind tell you to give up after day 40 or so.

This is the post about my 21st attempt at this challenge over the years and my 19th time finishing successfully!

In late June, I went on a biz trip and came home with a kidney infection. Was hospitalized and was allowed to do normal things only on 7th July. Even then I was not fully back to my old self. Had lost 11 lbs during this ordeal and was still hitting the restroom every two hours to pee.

My wife knew that I measured my “being normal” with my being able to do yoga on any given day. If I could do yoga, was good for the next 22 hours. If not, something is off and needs to be fixed. That has been the benchmark for a long time. She signed me up for the 60 day challenge this time. I was planning to skip it. We can sign up any day between 1st and 14th of July and finish 60 days from our start date. Usually don’t sign up if I don’t see a possibility of finishing. However, my name was on the board. So I started going to class with her on the 11th and kept going. The Yoga and the hot room always heal and this time was. no different. Within a week I was better physically and mentally. Then came the hike to Mt. Dana. I missed three days. Managed to do doubles the following weekend to make up for it and all was well.

Then out of nowhere, my right knee started swelling. Had to go to the hospital. Fluid was drained, a steroid shot was given, not much specifics on identifying the root cause. Was asked to go do usual stuff like rest, ice, elevate compress, alternate heat and cold etc.. Based on the detailed tests it was a meniscus tear that did not need surgery. Sat at home for 4 more days with the ice water circulating machine.

Hot yoga room heats you all over, not just the knee. Given I was 3/4th of the way to finishing the challenge, went and did what I could without having any lateral knee movement. I was still going to office, driving (which made it worse), avoid staircases(except for a fire drill at work that made things much worse) and the hot room actually helped me deal with things mentally and physically to keep going.

There is a saying in Tamil “Saaga pozhudhu irundhaalum vega pozhudhu illai!” which translates to “even if you find the time to die, you don’t time to burn in the cremation pyre”. A thing that says you are “that busy”! It felt like that for the last 12 days of the challenge. Fortunately there was the labor day weekend to wrap things up and rest. The challenge was done!

There is a lot to learn about yourself (body and mind) in every challenge. This was no different. You can see the end of the video for what is possible.

At one point San told me to stop the challenge by saying “I asked you to start it. I am asking you to stop it!”. Did not have the heart to tell her that she has just become like my mom. Reminded me of my mom saying “I asked you to go to the US. Now I am asking you to come back!” . This after being married, having two kids and a job and set life here. 50+ days into a challenge you just can’t wind it down and call it quits. Used to be the poster boy for BYSJ, recently the posters changed and the new ones are awesome.! The baton has been passed to some of my Yoga peeps. Folks were making jokes that “maybe it is a sign from above to stop the challenge”. Every tool in the emotional toolkit was tried to make me stop this, but I finished. Have been on a break from yoga for 10 days now and things only got worse now.

Will see if something is actually damaged and follow up on how to heal. San treated me to a “challenge finish lunch” at Bhimas. Usually it is Aaloo paratha at Chaat House right after the challenge party. This time, it was a lunch treat!

San is my biggest supporter and she is always right. It takes me time to realize that sometimes. Eventually I come around. Her theory is that I have something torn or broken and it is not diagnosed yet. So till I get it understood, I should be very careful. That I am taking to heart. This challenge is all her!

Have told her that 20 is a round number. Maybe after the next challenge, I will not sign up every year.

Here are some pictures..

San made it look like I am eating a 2 foot poori.. it is a small poori!

This banner has been replaced by new really good ones which show the community. There used to be a sense of added responsibility when this was there. I would never sit down during triangle pose. Still don’t. Now I give the new poster boys a hard time telling them “they should not skip the poses they are doing on the wall”.

here is the video of the speech

Have said this before and will say it again.

In today’s world keeping your immune system and having the ability to heal yourself after any injury or ailment is important, given the cost and quaiity of medical care. We have to give our doctors also something to work with and that comes from within.

Yoga helps you do that.

Hot yoga is even better. The heat and humidity make it safer to stretch.

Doing yoga regularly is good.

Having a continuous practice where you come day after day is even better for a lot of reasons (you can read all those old 60 day challenge posts over the years in this blog alone).

If you haven’t done a challenge try it. if you did and were not able to finish, sign up for the next one and finish. if you did do the challenge and finish, sign up again to learn something new about yourself!

This challenge is dedicated to San. She is my rock! Also a big thanks to BYSJ, all my teachers and fellow students for keeping this going!

60 day challenge: If you can, you must!

Over the last two months a lot has happened but in the midst of all the other things that kept me busy, Jan and Feb saw me do something very difficult.

My 20th attempt at the 60 day hot yoga challenge at Bikram Yoga San Jose.

It does not matter how many times one does this before. Every challenge is “a challenge”.

This year, I was really looking forward to a conference in Arizona towards the end of Feb / Early march and some business travel. So I did do a bunch of doubles early on to finish the challenge a week ahead of the 60 days. My finishing class was jointly celebrated with my teacher Sarah. (but we were not the first to finish this year. one guy had us beat by a week as he was also traveling).

When the challenge was done, realized that this years Challenge party was going to be right on the day the challenge ended. Missed the party for th first time because of a prior commitment to volunteer all day for two back to back music concerts. One cannot be in two places at once, at least not with my level of yogic practice.

Wrote my note of thanks and had San read it at the party. Really proud of my girl as she also finished her 3rd challenge two days later. There is no pic of me collecting a T-shirt this time. Here is my celebratory photo with Michele who still has the same glow around her since the day we met, while I age gracefully over 20 challenges?!

San talking for both of us at the challenge party!

Life is funny. So glad to have finished the challenge a week early. Flew back home after a biz trip right after finishing the challenge and was having a post dinner snack of ribbon pakodas. There was a stone in my mouth which I thought was from the pakoda packet. Turns out that an ancient filling from 1993 had come off with a quarter of my pre-molar. To top things off the gum on my front tooth detached and got infected. Had to go on antibiotics and visit the dentist repeatedly till they could fix it albeit temporarily.

They say “physically, mentally, spiritually”.. it should be changed to “medically, dentally, mentally and spiritually”! Dental is definitely unrelated to rest of the body. Guess that is why dentistry is not covered in the “medical plans”!

Had to pull out of the conference last minute and deal with lots of pain. Still recovering over the last two weeks. The added lesson is that if we get a chance to finish things off, you should do that. Never know what life throws at you!

A heartfelt thanks to my BYSJ family for everything!

Perspective

It has been more than 3 months since this blog saw an entry! There are no particular reasons for it. We did go on a bunch of hikes, but mostly to places already visited. Then our hikes came to an end as our group leader had an injury and is recovering slowly but surely.

There were two hectic work trips to India in a space of two months. There was some sporadic singing. Some illness, etc.. basically the usual for this household. Somehow didn't get to put fingers to keyboard in 3 months!

Well, now that there is a break for the next ten days, all those unfinished blog posts will hopefully see the publish button!

This one though, is a fresh post. In early September, my yoga guru Michelle watched me look longingly at my usual spot in the hot yoga room.. her mat was already in that spot! She saw me and said "you can have your spot. I can move!". I should have known then and there that there was a catch.. Michelle makes sure I don't miss my mom when she does things like this.

At the end of the class we are walking out and she goes "you know what will be good for you? try a challenge where you practice in all 48 spots in the room! It will give you a much needed perspective. I recently just finished taking class in every spot in the room and it taught me a lot about my practice and myself!"

I mumbled "okay, sure!".. and got a look that said "mean it!". Was even told that the website for the studio had a pdf of the room layout with all the spots marked!

Came home and printed that out and started on 9th September to do this "Do yoga in every one of the 48 spots in the room" challenge. Called it the "studio tour". Finally finished this challenge on Sunday 18th December. It took me 100 days to cover 48 spots! There were many challenges. If I didn't get to class early enough, all the spots I needed were already taken and I didn't want to ask anyone to move. This went on too long and finally my wife asked my friend to move spots on the last day just so I could be done with this!

Now, for the perspective.. all of you know about my spreadsheet that has my attendance, teacher, time, weight after class etc.  for 12 years. Have finished 2642 classes as of this evening. I am guessing 9/10 classes have been in the three corner spots in the right side of the yoga room over all these years!

The corner has more clear views in the front and side mirrors and you have less nearest neighbors! Also I cannot hear well on the other side of the room maybe because my one ear has an issue. Whatever the reasons, I am a creature of habbit and have stuck to that corner.

This was a real challenge for me to go off my comfort zone and try different locations in the room. Now that I am back home.. ie. back my usual spot in the last few days, it is actually the best spot in the room for me. My best practice is when I am close to the front and side mirrors and can hear the teacher clearly. There is no doubt about it. That was my learning. Folks who saw me walk into class everyday with a map wanted me to share the experience.. so here is a summary

Are there other spots in the room I liked? Yes. The ones right in front of the teacher, which no one wants. Those are actually great spots if the teacher doesn't move around the podium during the balancing series.

Are there spots I really did not like? Yes. There are spots where the door or window was behind me. I could not balance well at all in those spots. There are spots where you lie down on the floor and can see the sparrows in the trees outside. Too distracting. I don't know how the yogis used to mediate on one leg in a forest.. with all those damn birds flying around from branch to branch. I love birds and watch them for long times at home drinking tea.. but when you are hanging on for dear life and trying to recover your heartrate after an asana, the birds don't help.. at all!

Then there are spots which are directly in line with the mirror ends. The yoga room has wall mirrors.. when you hit the seam of the mirrors and you try to do asanas in front of the seam, you get split into two parts in the mirror. It is as though I have multiple personalities in front of me. A calm me vs. an irate me.

Did I open my mind to new possibilities with this challenge? Yes and No. Sometimes you have to try things that make you uncomfortable.. at least once.. or say in this case 40 times out of 48. Was hoping to become more tolerant to the other locations. When you have three rows of people in front of you and most of them don't think of the people behind them and fidget around, start the pose too early or too late or lie down, it is good that they are doing what is best for them.. but it is not what is best for me. This made me realized the tremendous impact I have in the first row on the folks behind me. Now I think a lot before sitting down for any pose and try to minimize fidgeting.

Did I gain anything by trying out all those spots? Yes. Made some new friends who were suprised to see me in the other part of the room. This room has as much spread as the world. Turns out there are folks who practice for years on either side of this room and they just nod to each other and say hi on the way in and out but never have conversations with folks from the "dark side".. and to each side the other is the dark side! There are front row people and last row people and there are tempraments, reasons, preferences.

Over the 48 spots, I learned a lot about the folks who call those their "usual spot", and why! That was an interesting social study in itself.

Here is the other weird thing. People thought I was sick or recovering from either flu or covid or was having a tough day to show up in the last row.. or I had to leave early right after class, when I took spots near the door. During the early days of the challenge my teachers would call me and say "there is an open spot in the front for you ?".. then I had to go tell them about this personal challenge!

Would I suggest this challenge to others? Yes. You might be a better person than me when it comes to being a lot more open minded or selfless when it comes to the yoga practice. So please give it a shot. This was harder logistics wise than doing a 60 day challenge. You can't always get the spot you want if you don't come early enough. Some folks show up 30 minutes before class to get their spots! You have to come at a different time to even get those spots.

A big thanks to Michelle for pushing me out of that spot for 3 months, my wife for patiently putting up with my requests to go early to yoga class just to get a certain spot .. on multiple days, especially towards the end and to my friend Natalie for giving up a spot on the last day of the challenge!

Somehow I feel free to be in any spot in the room, after this tour! However, my gut tells me that you will most likely find me in my usual corner.
