Comparisions

Was eating Arisi Pori (Rice crispies) last night. Bought a big bag at my favorite Kabali Pori Kadalai just before leaving India. Finished off that bag last night.. and feel so sad.

The Pori we get in the Indian stores here tastes really stale and is not crispy and the ones that are crispy taste too salty.

The little one came to me and said "give me the last few pori"

She ate it and went "This is like the Popcorn of India, Appa!"

Was in two minds to start a debate on "NO. Popcorn is the Pori of USA!" and decided against it.

Popcorn isn't bad either. It is "ezhaikku etha Pori urundai"!

(Non Tamil speakers, sorry, the last part loses a lot in translation)

Why can't we get good quality Pori (puffed rice) in the USA? Why? Why?

How does one make...

Arisi Pori (rice puffs, popped rice like popcorn?)..aval pori, or Nellu Pori?

Is there a "do it yourself" video out there?

I have tried throwing soaked and half dried rice into popcorn makers, microwaves, etc. etc. with no luck in getting a nice "pori".

If anyone can give me a quick cheat way to make this, will be truly appreciated..

If you give me a method which will work with reasonable success, willing to try it and videoblog it also.

A friend's mom gave us some home made yummy mixture today. Interestingly it had Kellog's rice crispies substituted for the pori in our typical Mixture. It was a stroke of genius from mami to do that!

What if I want to make Pori at home though?

Any tips from the WWW out there?
