How does one make...

Arisi Pori (rice puffs, popped rice like popcorn?)..aval pori, or Nellu Pori?

Is there a "do it yourself" video out there?

I have tried throwing soaked and half dried rice into popcorn makers, microwaves, etc. etc. with no luck in getting a nice "pori".

If anyone can give me a quick cheat way to make this, will be truly appreciated..

If you give me a method which will work with reasonable success, willing to try it and videoblog it also.

A friend's mom gave us some home made yummy mixture today. Interestingly it had Kellog's rice crispies substituted for the pori in our typical Mixture. It was a stroke of genius from mami to do that!

What if I want to make Pori at home though?

Any tips from the WWW out there?

.

Dear Mr. Sundar,

Have been following your blog for a couple of years.

What made me comment for this post is "Pori". For the past couple of days, I was thinking about the same. And hence I was surprised to see a post from somebody on this.

I do not have a succesful method for you. But I can strike out the option of pop-corn maker, which I had in mind.

However I wanted to try roasting the rice in a pan (without oil) as we do for venn pongal and then to try out the pop-corn maker. All the best.

I do not have a pop-corn maker at home and hence I don't know the outcome.

....I used to buy roasted peanuts after school and eat them while I walked back home...I remember seeing them making nell pori...very hazy memory though...

In a think bottomed pan, they used to heat sand and heat it for a while and when it was hot enough(I think you need to figure this out by trial and error) they used to put nellu and mix it well with the sand and the husk and pori splits...and then they take a jaladai(sieve) and remove the sand and then put it in a moram(i have no clue about the english equivalent) separate husk from pori...

They used to do the same with peanuts too...that is why peanuts roasted at home never tastes as good as ones done at the store...

and for aval i have no clue...i guess they soak pori ...put them in ural and kutthify using http://lakshmiammal.files.wordpress.com/2006/12/dec-173.jpg?w=500" rel="nofollow">ulakai

when I come to unga area next time...lets make soan papadi ok?

Well I have to agree with your friend ME on this. I have seen it in the aval kadai with sand.

You can def try corn flakes for a healthy option I do it. Also I have tried frying regular aval in oil. Time consuming though :-)

Keep it coming,
V

Try getting the pori from the indian store and then fry it in a nonstick pan with a little bit of oil and some turmeric. It's awesome of course not from first principles.

need to find safe "Manal" .. next trip to the beach will get some, clean it and try this..

the popcorn maker experiment failed again in spite of a long pre-heat treatment in salt water as mentioned in the link provided by YY.

:)

VBR, I have tried many different permutations using my pop corn maker and have not succeeded.

manal it is.

:)

Kavi, will get this.. taking it up as a challenge.

Me, next time you come here we make soan papdi..

V, thanks.

Judo, we do that usually to get the stale pori from Indian store to get some freshness again.. we also add Hing and some green chilis and curry leaves along with turmeric powder ..

:)
