Arrival of the Extender

The 70-200mm f2.8 L was to be accompanied by a Canon EF 2x ii Extender which is actually a tele-converter that makes the:

70 -200 f2.8 into a
140-400 f5.6

It did not arrive with the lens before the long weekend trip but made its debut today.

Tried it on some usual subjects in the backyard and it is fantastic.

A shot of the backyard baby squirrel with the lens set to 200 mm (equates to 400mm zoom)..

Very happy.. no, make that ecstatic!

Ikebana show - Wow!

Did not know much about Ikebana till today. Still don't, but at least got introduced to the concept at the Flower show at the local community center.

It was awesome!

The arrangements looked picture perfect to the point where Jr. and the little one kept asking "Are they real flowers or fake?" over and over again.

Are these real daddy?

how about these ones. are they real?

I learned something new today. My kids are uncomfortable around "perfection" or the notion of "perfection"..

Was taking pictures of the arrangements and the flowers in the arrangements and in the process learnt a lot about changing zoom lenses fast. Finally decided to do multiple rounds of the show...

with wide angle
with telephoto
with macro!

see results..

this one is with the sigma lens maxed out at 200mm taken at ISO 1600, f6.0, 1/60 sec.
Autofocus makes a big difference..

this one with the 50mm macro lens at ISO 1600, f5.6, 1/60 sec. The macro lens was on manual focus and it has a real small depth of field but where it focusses, it is unbelievably sharp and detailed. Should have taken a tripod with me and it would have been better..

The next bunch of pictures are taken with different lenses..

The bud and the flowers are either zoomed in or magnified with macro. You can see the image differences..

For those local readers, it is open tomorrow also. Definitely worth a visit.

A big thanks to the organizers and participants in the events for this visual treat.

zooming...zooming..

Just to put the size of the flowers in perspective...

18->51->115->154->200 mm

That will do Sigma.. that will do.

Have visions of me saying like that the way "Farmer" says it to Babe...

Woodland Park Zoo - Photoblog

There comes a time in every mans life when he starts straying.. and gives in to temptation. You have been faithful and loyal to what you thought was a "vision to behold", the "apple of your eye" etc. etc. only to find by chance that sometimes you might just have missed out on a lot of fun.

Okay. We are not talking about my woman here, though god knows that Seattle women who come to the Woodland park zoo on a summer weekday can make you doubt your own resolve. That zoo can as well market itself as a pickup bar! As usual we digress, especially after a whole post has been dedicated to this topic already..

Now that you have guessed the names of all those animals from their butt shots, here are their portraits. But before going further, we have to clarify. The Canon digital rebel with the simple 28-80 (non image stabilized) lens is not exactly zoo material, except for low light shots.

The BIL has recently acquired a Nikon D40 with the works (body, wide angle, telephoto, tripod, etc. etc.). He had the 55-200 lens on his Nikon and in an impulsive move, I grabbed his camera to take a shot, simply because my camera couldn't zoom that nicely. Lo and behold, what a shot!

The rest of the zoo trip, would borrow his lens at every opportunity.

Love my Canon. This is not a camera limitation. If the old Tamron 18-200 lens was there, it would have done the job. There are no imminent zoo trips, so the wait for the lens will continue.

All shots taken with D40 except the snakes which were taken with the Canon.

Finally, our wild ones..

At the end of this trip when we were driving back, one thought kept crossing my mind. Human beings, inspite of all their flaws are the most fascinating of creatures.

Time Warp

This clock was a wedding gift to us from my sisters classmates (REC Tiruchy).

Decided to play with the camera a little bit. A colleague had taken a picture recently of pebbles under a water stream where he moved the zoom over a long exposure to focus on one single pebble in the center of the camera (a round pebble)

Tried that with the clock on a 4 second exposure. Gives you a pretty interesting picture..

Then got greedy and tried the same thing with a candle. Interesting, huh?
(what you see is not the candle's reflection, but a zoomed up version of the glass superimposed on the zoomed in version)

Like this trick. Next step, make my posing pro, Jr. stand absolutely still while I zoom her portrait..
