Same Same but different

Conversation overheard:

Little One : What mammu (food) are you going to make?
Grandma : Rasam
Jr. : What about More (More in Tamizh is buttermilk!)
Grandma : A little confused because she thought Jr. is mentioning the english word "more" for more Rasam rice..

then while I feed the kids, Grandma decides to start a game..

Kids, lets find out other words that say the same thing, but mean different things in English and Tamizh!

Jr. : Poo !
Grandma : How? (me looking puzzled as well, How?)
Jr. : Poo Poo means two flowers in Tamizh (saying the word twice apparently counts as two flowers!) and Poo Poo means what we go in the bathroom!

we started laughing out loud and that is when the little one chipped in with

"I have another word.. I have another word"

As the equal opportunity daddy, I ask Jr. to keep quiet and say

"Okay LO, your turn now! Tell us." and the response?

Potty! It means grandma in Tamizh and bathroom in english!

Jr.'s mention of Poo Poo led the little one to think Potty and she made a connection with Paati vs. Potti!

Slight pronunciation difference.. but she gets points for being creative!

Now the question for the readers.

Is there a single word for this in the english dictionary? Same phonetically sounding word, that means different things in different languages?!

Let me know. In the meantime we will explore more such words and hopefully we will move away from the bathroom to living room related words!

Free rice

If you are sick and recovering and you are alone in the middle of the night, checking emails, catching up on work, bloghopping, and you come across a great site (thanks to Adengappa and Porcupyn)that :

a. keeps you occupied
b. is a charity that feeds the poor

it is a win-win situation!

Go ahead, try it!

http://www.freerice.com/

All those years of studying for the GRE using the olds Baron's Guide came in handy!

I was going great guns till the word "gelt" stopped me dead in my tracks. (I had made one mistake on the way and the system gave me a few tougher words before it let me get back to the same level). I also lucked out once because I had narrowed the answer to one of two choices and I used Jr.'s algorithm,

aka

eenie, meenie, miney mo
catch the tiger by the toe!

Now, you can wake me up at 3:00AM in the morning and ask me "what does gelt mean?" and I will instantly say "Money"!, that is if I am not already awake at 3:00 AM!

Glad I found this site!

ps. We are all doing much better today than yesterday.

Thanks for all your wishes! - Sundar, Sangeetha, Jr., Little one, Washer and Dryer.

Note to self..

A note to myself and to other people who write the usual family oriented blogs...

When you write posts on "item numbers", they may be picked up by sites like

"African American P*&n Stars" etc..

Not good for the reputation of this blog..

That is on the bad side.

Now on the disastrous side, I may have unwittingly pointed out to the average reader of above mentioned site that Kollywood movies have some things that might interest their taste and in the process created a handshake between our item number directors and the African American Stars..

God, please forgive me. Give me the wisdom to know when to keep my mouth shut!

I can already hear the wife say "Amen", when she reads this post tomorrow....

Peesh and Goflish

The little one is talking and learning a gillion words a day.

She was pointing to the baby animals book and saying Peesh, Peesh , Goflish..

I thought Peesh was fish and Goflish was Goldfish, but Peesh actually turned out to be Sheep in disguise!

She is now talking sentences (not the Deda Nu Cheeesse stuff), but actual three four word sentences.

She has also learnt to "lie"!!!

Yesterday she acted as though she had hurt herself after falling on the carpet, was rubbing her knee and crying. For some reason, the crying was just not genuine enough and then suddenly her crying turned to laughter and she looked at me and said "lie"!

Guess even at 20 months a kid can grasp the concept of deception and lies. I told her not to tell lies again and she goes "Okay"!

I am scared.

Blog Rating

This blog is rated :

Online Dating

Mingle2 - Online Dating

Rating was seen on Raj's site..

It is funny that I got this rating based on words used recently:

Hell (4x)
shoot (2x)
death (1x)

well I was talking about point and "shoot" camera's!!

So, this rating is not that smart, but it is an interesting concept.
