Lessons not learned
A long long time ago, wrote a post on making "rava seedai" and how it can be a dangerous thing to make!
Fast forward to last saturday evening. The little one asks that I make some crunchy Thenkozhal for her. Guess when grandma goes to India we have a drought in the snack department. Having a few free hours between lunch and the evening yoga class, decided to make her happy.
The two of us worked together to make a batch of yummy thenkozhal in under an hour!
When we were done, there was still a few pieces of the maavu (batter) stuck on the extruder and the vessel. Usually grandma takes those, and drops a few of them as small hand rolled pieces into the oil and the little one gets those!
So, to make the experience complete, I rolled the last few bits of dough and dropped them in the oil. Then she walked away from the kitchen and I started cleaning the countertop. It must have been less than 20 seconds later when one of those pieces exploded in the oil.
There was oil everywhere in the kitchen. Luckily I closed my eyes for a second. Oil hit the left side of my face and hair and I had to run to the sink and put cold water on my face.
Then I had the brilliant idea to ask my wife and kids "How bad does it look?" and they said "your face looks normal.. slightly red at places but nothing bad". This was followed by another brilliant idea to ignore the slight irritation and go to yoga class and sweat it out.
When I came out of the class my eyelid and face showed a bruise like stain. By Sunday afternoon it was a blister in my eyelid which popped and as of now it looks like this!
Good thing I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second!
Now the pain and irritation on the side of the face is coming down with ice treatment, but the eyelid is another story. Everytime I open and close my eyes, it hurts like hell.
This is a good reminder for everyone out there who wants to use that last piece of batter .. it is not worth it! Let it go!
This is also a good reminder to wait a few hours after hot oil hits your face before deciding "it is not a big deal".. sometimes it takes a few hours to see what has really happened!
