While eating the tamarind rice and choking on it, I asked San "arent we supposed to be on a boat tour today as well?" and she goes "In the interest of time I did not book it!".. a few tears and sentimental dialogues that would seriously make Sivaji Ganesan hand over his Chevalier award to me, we called the tour operator and were confirmed for the 5PM (last) boat tour of Antelope Canyon. We were asked to be at the dock 15 minutes before and the dock was 15 minutes from our hotel.
We decided to take a power nap for an hour and head out..
it was Antelope canyon day.. a tour all morning, a tour all afternoon and now for the evening a boat tour.
We realized while entering the dock that the boat tour fees did NOT include the entry to the dock which was part of the National park service. If you don't have a National park pass, you have to pay 30 $.. if you do enjoy national parks, strongly recommend you get the annual pass for 80 bucks. It is always a good thing to support our national parks!
Seeing natural wonders gives me more goosebumps than visiting any temple. Keep telling my family that if you want to realize god, go to a National park and take a look from any vista point! Or look at the smiling face of your spouse or children.. while the second option makes you mentally happy, you don't get the exercise.. so go to the parks!
The boat tour was great! we got waterbottles on the boat and a tourguide who was local and gave us a personalized tour as we spent an hour on a boat going through the canyon on water!
Loved it through and through!
a photo gallery of the nature pics..
Once done, we decided to go find dinner in Page. The first mexican place we went to had a 45 minute wait. So we went to the second one and were promptly seated. The food was amazing as was the service.
my models did not disappoint!
Video highlights reel of the boat tour and back..
The next morning was going to be an all day drive back to Phoenix after a few stops. So we decided to hit the one big super Walmart in the area before going to bed. Have not seen a store this big in my life! Stocked up on some yogurt, bottled water etc. for the return trip and made it back to the hotel.
After we were dropped off at the tour operator office for Upper Antelope canyon, we walked as fast as we could to our rental car that had been baking in the parking lot, and made a dash to the office for Lower Antelope canyon tours.
When we went to check in, the tour was just about to start. Good thing I dropped off the ladies to find parking. By the time I made it to the office, the tour started. After walking a 100 feet with the group realized that my iPhone was missing. The tour guide said "sir, if you leave the group now, you cannot join again!". In two minds the whole time, tried to put the iPhone off my head and decided to enjoy the tour with the SLR.
Did take a few photos with San's phone. Fortunately it had just dropped below the bags in the trunk. So all was well.
The lower antelope canyon looks even more amazing because you wouldn't expect a small gap on a rock side to open into such an amazing place!
This one is even more mind boggling than the upper canyon. The features look the same but the colors and swirls and light show within the canyon walls is amazing. The paths are also a lot more narrower at places and you are better off watching your head at all times!
No video for this tour.. but plenty of pictures. The tourguide and SIL became art directors and we ended up doing a lot of posing, to add to the fun!
Nature galleries..
We walked back to the car. The guide was telling us about the one plant that grows everywhere in the area that the Indians use as morning tea and herbal supplement for all ailments!
We took a short break at the tour office and took pictures in front of the murals..we had not had a break for food or restroom since leaving the hotel in the morning.
They were all smiles after the tour.. This was just for the photo. We were glad to make it back to the hotel room to finish the leftover idlis, tamarind rice and thayir sadam that was waiting for us in the fridge.
No wonder the kids refused to come with us on tours these days. The very sight of those tamarind rice, idly and thayir sadam packets makes them run.. it is just a question of time before they pack the same thing and drag their kids along to national parks..
Strongly recommend the lower antelope canyon if you go to this area. Do NOT miss it! Given a choice of either canyon, pick this one..
We had one more tour for the day.. that in the next post!
After reaching Page, Arizona and having a good nights rest, we were ready to see the main attraction.
We reached the tour company office and checked in. There were going to be half a dozen full open vehicles that were going to leave at the same time.
They started promptly. My promise to make this trip a safe one for San's already bad back was broken within the first 10 minutes of this open vehicle ride to the canyon entrance. It was so bumpy that folks with normal backs would get back problems! She just tightened her belt. There wasn't much we could do.
We see a small crack in the mountain side and it is hard to believe that this crack winds around for a good 1/2 a mile through some breathtaking formations!
The tour guide was wonderful. We told her that we were to be on time finishing as there was another tour we had to be on and she understood. She told us it would be touch and go. Usually people book the Lower and upper canyon tours on two separate days as there is no chance for. a lunch break between.
Given this post is going up after 4th of July when it happened during Memorial day, a lot of things slip my mind. A few things I remember are that the rocks looked orange to yellow to red depending on the reflecting sun from the top. I didn't want to adjust the white balance. So what you see is mostly what it looked like.. including the red glow on our faces inside the canyon!
The walk is leisurely but watch for your head. All of us bumped our head in some point or another during the walk and it was painful.
First the video highlights..
Here are some people pictures..
The entrance to the canyon..
As soon as we entered..
The rest of the canyon photos need a large gallery.. there were 2000 photos from the iPhone and SLR that needed some curating..
The photos below were courtesy of our tourguide...
Saw a little cave and thought it would be a good idea to take a photo in a meditative pose.. bad idea. those things next to me .. tumbleweed full of thorns.. sat on some that were burried in the sand and got my fingers bloodied trying to move them away. End up being a real meditative photo where I tried to forget the sharp pain for the photo! Shit we do for a good picture.. sometimes these moments teach us great lessons!
another gallery with pictures in portrait format..
There may be a few photos from lower antelope that are mixed in (very few).. My sincere apologies.. if you go visit Antelope canyon, you should visit both the upper and lower antelope canyonsa and budget enough time.
You can skip the lunch, start with upper canyon, rush to tour company place and drive immediately to the lower canyon tour starting point. Give yourself 20 minutes. You can also call the lower canyon tour folks while driving to just wait a minute or two.. That helps! Then you can do the two tours back to back and have a late lunch at 2 PM or later!
Please note that the two tours are operated by two different companies and they don't care about the other schedule. If you want to do this peacefully, budget two different days for these two tours!
Over the Memorial day long weekend, San myself and my SIL who visited from Melbourne, made a three day trip to Arizona.
This trip had been planned months in advance to visit Antelope canyon. This was yet another "bucket list" trip. Our previous plans had all been cancelled or we could not get reservations to visit the canyon on usual long weekends. The tour is owned by an Indian reservation and they limit the number of people who can walk through it every day.
San tore her back muscle the previous week and was pretty much in bed rest when my SIL showed up. We were in two minds initially. Told her that it will be okay. It was a 3 hour flight and a 5+ hour drive from Phoenix to the hotel in Page, Arizona. If we took enough breaks and she sat with a waist belt and a pillow for the plane, car ride and rationed her painkillers.. it was doable. So the trip was on!
Took the Friday off and flew into Phoenix. Got our rental car and started driving out of the airport at 10AM. Our plan was to stop by Red Rock state park for two hours and make it to Page by 6 PM for dinner. Did not expect Friday morning traffic near Phoenix airport to be that intense. Everyone drives vehicles raised from the floor. Even cars seemed to be on some raised suspension! Folks follow some unwritten rule that larger the vehicle, less the obligation to follow driving rules. Felt like a rat running along the dinosaurs in a stampede of sorts.
Things got better once we were out of that area. We made a pit stop at Denny's. San and me both used to love Denny's. It was a go to place for us years ago. Could eat a pancake or waffle or engilish muffin anytime of the day! Their cheese sticks used to be amazing as well. Guess, Denny's is a shell of what it was before. The service and food quality was bad. Both me and my SIL had a queasy stomach after eating there. The worse thing was me telling my SIL about how good Denny's was and we ended up with that experience. Moral of the story : Don't live in the past. As a rule of thumb, food place quality goes only one way over time!
We made it to Red Rock state park a little after 1PM. They have a nice visitor center. It was a hot day and we decided to do the shortest trail to get a sample of the place. Walked a mile around a "cute" trail along the creem and took pictures from the vista point!
The trail itself was nice and cool. We would have loved to walk around some more but San had to go through the paces slowly. The unanimous vote was to make a non stop dash to Page from there.
We slowed down around Sedona and admired the cute shops and restaurants on the way. Had to make three stops. Readers please note that there are 40 mile stretches on the way from Sedona to Page where there are no restrooms! If you see one, stop. Don't think another one will come in 5 mins! You are welcome!
We made it to our hotel in Page by 7PM but our phones kept saying 8PM. I had panicked going "wait.. we drove an extra hour to get here?! How many stops did we do? I did drive reasonably fast". Apparently iPhones have a time issue in Page. They switch to Utah time. However Page follows Phoenix time which is same as CST. Again, if you are a poor driver who is asked why it took an extra hour to get to Page, check the local clocks. You are welcome!
Decided to torture the two ladies by singing "Adi aathaadi" in a high pitch for a good hour in the hotel room and was eventually confined to the restroom. Think everyone in the hotel must have complained about some deranged lunatic screaming in the restroom. Eventually there was a knock on the door to tell me that "enough was enough" and "things are actually getting worse on every new try". They prefered driving with the sun in their faces for hours compared to being a forced audience for this singing etc... so called it a night.
We were to spend the entire next day around Antelope canyon. We got plenty of rest to recover from the day of flying and driving.
A few pictures from Day 1...
just when we were asking ourselves "how do people live in this heat?" saw this..
apparently this is going to be a museum soon..
A gallery of photos of the park and other structures on our drive to Page.
A very different structure we saw right before we hit the town of Page.
A short video of the hike.. I provided humming bgm for the hike.. let us just say it was not a good idea.
If San was normal, and it was a cloudy day, we would have hiked the entire 5 mile trail to all the vista points. It was extremely hot and we were happy with the small hike.
This trip was being taken one step at a time.
The first step was to make it to Page without making San's back worse than where it was. That was done successfully!
