A happy day

The entire summer break came and is almost over.

Jr. came back from college but was mostly confined to her room, with her summer coursework. She also switched to a Noon to 3AM schedule, why I don't know. which meant I did not get to spend much time with her.

The only good thing was that I decided to work with her on one of her courses and that gave us a chance to talk more. The little one has been having stomach issues for a month now and we are asked to wait for few more weeks before we get to see a specialist. There is ONE pediatric GI specialist in Kaiser Santa Clara and one in Oakland, if you believe the nurse and appointment center! There seem to be more oncologists than GI specialists which I find interesting! We did spend time together watching Loki. We are both Marvel fans and that helps!

San has just started walking again and that is something. So what I am trying to say in an elaborate way is that this summer was a wash! We wanted to have one day, ONE freaking day where the four of us could go to see some nature, have a good meal outside and just have fun like old times (but with masks on, which I call fun with a mask discount).

We got our chance last evening. The summer courses are over as of last week. There was a good weeks rest. Now there were less excuses. So the kids agreed to sit in the car and drive an hour to SFO for the evening. They got to pick the eating. We got to pick the nature place. Given San has been to lands end many times and I have never seen it, we decided to go and walk down to the ocean.

The hole in the rock out in the ocean does look like a heart from this angle!

It was cold and windy and the place smelled like a sewer and dead fish. God works in mysterious ways. He really does. San swears that in her previous visits, she only smelled the ocean breeze! What we smelled was something to forget but hard to. Every now and then the breeze would come in and cleanse your nose.

The kids kept rolling their eyes going "this is why we don't come out!". We did manage to get a few pictures given this was our one day out.  It was beautiful to look at and thankfully photographs don't come with associated smells!

There is also a tunnel you can walk through. However, we took three steps into this thing and realized that it was a smell concentrator. Masks are not enough to walk through this thing. You need a respirator. So we took a selfie and kept moving. This blog is doing a public service. If you just look at the pictures and decide to walk into the tunnel, not good. Read the sentences between the pictures and you can thank me later.

Watching the kids sit there and talk made me think of my brother. We used to be thick as thieves but we rarely speak now. Hope they do better than us when they get to this age!

After spending an hour here, we decided to go to our dinner at Gracias Madre. It is my fourth or fifth time visiting this place and we were in and out in 40 minutes. We came, we ate, we left.

Ghirardelli's is only 15 minutes away and we wrapped up dinner with some dessert.

On the way the kids who usually don't ask for anything asked me to drive there through crooked street, for old times sake and I obliged..they know I don't like to drive there!

I always look forward to that big glass for the hot fudge Sundae and was disappointed to see it served in a plastic cup. The feel of the warm glass and the cold ice cream was lost with the plastic. It is also not easy to scrape off the hot fudge with a plastic spoon from a plastic cup. It is like serving perumal kovil sarkarai pongal in a Crème brûlée ramekin!

The ice cream did taste as good as it always does. The two different textures on my forehead was the subject of an interesting discussion...the shiny part defines the boundary of where hair "used to be" is a theory!

we walked around a bit and drove back!

A video clip..

It was the happiest we have been in a few months! We have to wait till the years end to do the next "family" outing and all plans are already being rejected by the kids.

Sometimes I think all this school and college stuff is taking out the fun for these kids! My sincere hope is that after finishing all this, they get to be more "outdoorsy" and the "travel bug" bites them hard!

I for one will remember this as the one bright evening for the last few months!

Happy Valentines day

Valentines day, celebrated with another hike. We have managed to do what I call the "grand slam" of Bay area hikes.. of the 4 tallest peaks (Umunhum, Hamilton, Tamalpais and Diablo).

We started at the State Park entrance parking lot (don't forget to take 10$ cash for the parking!)  and hiked up 2500 feet, 8 miles round trip over 3.5 hours. There was plenty of photo stops and a good 15 minutes spent at the summit tower. We got beautiful views of the area. Given the hour drive each way, the entire day has gone for this hike.

There was a quick packed lunch in picnic tables right at the parking lot before driving back.

Those were the Valentines photos.. She got a good hike with her hubby in tow.. I got some amazing photos.. win win situation!

This is a 300 degree Pano shot from the center of the summit tower..

Got a few panorama shots today that were pleasing

One of my favorite photos from the day

Today was perfect. It was cold but not very windy. The sun was behind clouds and we were walking in a mist for the most part. It was not a strenous hike given we took 4 or 5 breaks of 5 minutes each after every steep section to take pictures.

The rest of the pictures are in this slide show..

Could not have asked for a better way to spend the day!

Once again, wishing everyone a happy Valentines day!

Mt. Um from yet another angle -Quicksilver trail

We spent the day at Quicksilver trail in Almaden and got some clear views of the valley, and got to see another facet of Mt. Umunhum. By this time we have seen that building from every mountain around it..

First.. an MGR Saroja Devi moment captured for eternity..

The trails were steep and kept coming, maybe we should have come the opposite way. Nevertheless it was fun!

Direct sun gave us that orange glow!

did not get as many pictures on this trail as it did not have much room to step back and take pictures. Had to focus on the ground to be safe at all times! It was also busier than the other trails for the same time in the morning. So we tried to face the mountain side and let people pass every now and then!

The mansions on the hillside facing the trail were out of this world.. didn't realize there were this size mansions anywhere in our neighborhood!

A day well spent.. a nice hike that is definitely recommended if you go early in the morning before the sun is up high!

The last hike for 2020 - Mount Tamalpais

Rounding up the 2020 hiking with Mount Tamalpais.

Was not sure of going because my toe was still bruised. Then a USPS truck showed up at 6AM on the day of the hike, to deliver my New balance extra wide hiking shoes! So wore it and went on the hike.

It took us 90 minutes to get to the parking lot on Panorama way just before Stinson beach with the last 30 minutes being a windy road. Given we had left early, we found parking!  Then we walked up to Matt Davis trail view point through two other trails.  From this view point, you can see Stinson beach on the right and if you squint and zoom.. the San Francisco skyline on the left!

We hiked for almost 4 hours, ate a packed lunch in the parking lot and drove back. Stopped by a few view points along the coastal ridge to take pictures.

It was a beautiful sunny day out there.. by contrast we came home to a gloomy Cupertino and a light rain.

An entire day spent driving and hiking but the pictures and the fresh air was worth it. My toe although not damaged further is still in recovery mode.

Mount Diablo has to wait for a few weeks. . . we wanted to hike the bay area gland slam (Umunhum, Hamilton, Tamalpais and Diablo which are the four tallest mountains) and got 3/4 for 2020 which is pretty good!

Here are the pictures..

First the smiling faces that show up on FB preview!

We are really really nothing compared to these giant trees, but we have the destructive power to bring them down..

My favorite shots from the view point.. because I didnt have high hopes of gettting the skyline resolved (the photos were taken with an iPhone with a 10x zoom and holding my breath) but after putting the images through noise reduction on photoshop.. they came out better than I expected!

The trails had a lot of steps which made for pretty pictures, not that they were easy to climb..

we saw layers and layers of mountains with the fog and clouds before the sun peaked out.

and got treated to simmering ocean views..

Not to mention all the trail fun in between the ocean view vistas..

cute little waterfalls every now and then..

not to mention views of Stinson beach every now and then..

We stopped on the turnouts a few times to take pictures of the coastline.. you can see Twin peaks area in SFO in the background on this shot!

and my other favorite shot when the sun went behind the clouds...

As long as we walk in a steady pace and I get to take pictures and there is no discomfort, I get to enjoy the day. All three conditions were met on this hike.. new right shoes (with something called "toe protect"), nice tree cover for most of the hike, and amazing scenery to make the photographer happy!

a short video clip of snippets through the hike..

Next time if we hike this, we would probably leave an hour earlier so we can enjoy the beach for a short time after the hike. It was a 5 minute drive from where we parked in the other direction and the beach was empty. We did enjoy driving through the golden gate bridge early in the morning and on our way back home! Think this was my only time driving past the GGB this year!

A very enjoyable hike to round off 2020!

Castle Rock state park

The most recent hike with my wife was to Castle Rock State park. It was a good half day spent in great weather!

First off... we had fun on the trip, per these photos..

This park and trail was amazing. At one point we got a view to what must have been 10 layers of mountains all the way to the ocean.

The rest of the time we were treated to visuals of green hills as far as the eye could see

The trails were beautiful as well..

This big tree was just amazing and picturesque..

The entire park was beautiful. It was good we went early in the morning. There was a beautiful burnt tree root that was converted to a sculpture. My plan was to take a photo of it on the way back.. but given COVID, a lot of the paths have been made one way.. so we ended up returning to an overflow parking lot and walked on the road back to the main parking. Another trip, another day!

There was a lot of climbing up and down large rocks on the trail path. I did bruise my big toe by hitting it against the side of a rock. Turns out the shoes I recently bought were not the right ones.. working on getting better shoes this week!

Definitely recommend this trail for a half day hike if you are in south bay! I for one am happy to be going on all these hikes to explore the local parks in rapid succession.
